Weekend Shootings Leave 9 Dead, At Least 17 Wounded

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Yet another violent weekend in Chicago left nine people dead from gunfire and at least 17 others wounded – including a 3-year-old boy.

As WBBM Newsradio's Brandis Friedman reports, the weekend's youngest victim was shot in the arm around 11:30 p.m. Saturday as he walked with his parents in the 700 block of West 120th Street, in the West Pullman neighborhood.

The boy has been listed in stable condition, as police investigate whether there was a motive or an intended target.

The most recent shooting took the life of a 17-year-old in the Bronzeville neighborhood. It happened around 10:15 p.m.in the 800 block of East 45th Street near Cottage Grove Avenue.

A gunman got out of his car and started firing, reportedly with an AK-47 assault rifle. Lenard Truss, 17, was wounded in the head and died at the scene.

His family was too distraught to talk on camera, but said he was not in a gang and was just headed to a nearby convenience store.

Around 8:12 p.m. Sunday, a 19-year-old man was shot and killed in the 4100 block of West Van Buren Street, in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. He was hanging out with another teenager in a vacant lot, when he was shot multiple times in the chest.

A 19-year-old man shot multiple times in the chest was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The victim's mother identified him to the Chicago Sun-Times as Myrion Currie, of Mississippi.

The other fatalities included:

Kelly Vann, 49, of the 8900 block of South Commercial Avenue, who died after police found him at 2:14 a.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound to the temple in an abandoned lot in the 8800 block of South Exchange Avenue, in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Demarcus Ervin, 22, of the 200 block of North Lockwood Avenue, who was shot in the head in the 3100 block of West Van Buren Street, in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. A 27-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were also wounded in the shooting.

Jamel Shepard, 39, of the 4900 block of West Washington Boulevard, and Darnell Walker, 55, of the 7100 block of South Euclid Avenue, who were both shot in the chest while they sat on Shepard's South Austin neighborhood porch about 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

John Kouzious, 33, of the 3000 block of South Kedvale Avenue, and Jose Galvin, of the 4200 block of West 26th Street, who were gunned down in a vehicle that then crashed into a tree about 2:43 a.m. Saturday.

William Cook, 19, of the 5200 block of South Talman Avenue, who was shot in the chest in his Gage Park neighborhood home about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

In total, 17 people were wounded in shootings throughout the city this weekend.
