Woman Injured After Falling On Third Rail At Howard 'L' Terminal

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman fell and touched the electrified third rail at the Howard CTA Red Line terminal Sunday night.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski says the woman slipped on the tracks at the terminal in Rogers Park.

But the woman was said to have been conscious and breathing after the incident.

The woman was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Hosinski said. Her condition was not immediately learned.

Power was shut down on the Red Line for about 15 minutes starting shortly before 10:30 p.m., Hosinski said. The Purple and Yellow lines also use the Howard terminal.

Contact with the third rail can have deadly consequences. Back in April, Zachary McKee, 27, of Ossian, Ind., died after falling onto the third rail while urinating on the 'L' tracks at the South Boulevard Purple Line stop in Evanston.

The third rail carries about 660 volts of live electricity.
