Two Girls -- 12 And 13 -- Shot In Morgan Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two girls were shot and wounded – one of them critically – Tuesday evening in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

Chicago police said a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were shot at about 7:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of West 117th Street.

The 12-year-old girl suffered two gunshot wounds to the stomach, and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The 13-year-old girl was shot in the leg. She was taken to Roseland Community Hospital. Her condition was described only as stable.

Witnesses said the girls were hanging out in Cooper Park when shots came from across the street, and the girls were injured.

Beverly Wilson Ellison said, "I heard four to six gunshots – to me – it sounded like four to six rapid gunshots. Like, four then maybe two maybe two seconds later, but all together in the same 10-second timeframe."

One of the girls managed to crawl or walk to the nearby Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, about two blocks south, to get help.

Police on the scene said it appeared to have been a gang-related shooting, and the girls were not the intended targets.
