Around 9:20 p.m. Sunday, the trio robbed a gas station in the 800 block of Main Street Antioch. They flashed a semi-automatic handgun and pepper-sprayed the clerk while holding her at gunpoint and demanding money, making off with an unspecified sum.

The robbers then sped off on Route 83 in their silver Chevrolet sedan.

Police chased the car as it accelerated to more than 100 mph. But at Eagle's Nest Road, the driver lost control and crossed into the opposite lane, flipped into a ditch and slammed into a tree.

An as-yet-unidentified person was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where they were listed in critical condition, police said.

Evidence was found at the scene that linked the suspects to a robbery on Tuesday of last week in Antioch. The suspects are also believed to be involved in several other armed robberies.
