State Encourages Consumers To Buy Products Made In Illinois To Boost Economy

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The state of Illinois is kicking off a campaign today to get you to try to buy more products that are made in Illinois.

As WBBM's Bernie Tafoya reports, Jennifer Tyrie of the Illinois Department of Agriculture said  if every Illinois household would pledge to spend $10 a week in groceries on products from Illinois, it would generate nearly $2.5 billion to the Illinois economy each year.

"We're talking about barbeque sauces, we're talking about pizzas, we're talking about honey, we're talking about coffee -- any product made in Illinois -- we're also talking about fresh fruits and vegetables," Tyrie said.

There was a red and blue Illinois product logo that had been around since the late '80s, but it didn't get much promotion or notice.
