Teen Injured After Falling While Car Surfing

PINGREE GROVE, Ill. (CBS) -- A 13-year-old boy from northwest suburban Pingree Grove is beginning to recover from injuries suffered when he fell off the hood of his older brother's car.

"He's hanging in there," said Pingree Grove Police Chief Carol Lussky.

The 13-year-old suffered head injuries when he fell off of the car; Lussky said she was told that the car came to a stop on his chest and ran over his ankle.

After initial treatment by Pingree Grove fire paramedics, a Flight for Life helicopter transported the boy to Lutheran General Hospital, in Park Ridge, following the accident Monday night in extremely critical condition, although he was conscious at the time.

The 16-year-old was driving on a learner's permit and hit the brakes sharply. She says his brother was not standing, and that he was holding onto the windshield wipers, with his chest flat on the hood of the car, before he fell off.

No matter how the 13-year-old tried to ride, Lussky said the stunt was "extremely" dumb and said she hopes it serves as a warning to others of the dangers involved.

Lussky said police and prosecutors will not be in a rush to press charges because of the extent of the younger boy's injuries; the 16-year-old was released to his mother's custody.
