Boy, 6, And His Mother Killed When Car Crosses Median On Lake Shore Drive

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A six-year-old boy and his mother were killed and two other people were injured in a car crash in the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive Saturday evening.

The boy, whose age and home address are being withheld pending family notification, was taken in critical condition to Lurie Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m., according to officials.

His mother was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

The mother and son were driving northbound on Lake Shore Drive when they lost control, according to police News Affairs. They crossed the median into the southbound lanes where they struck another car.

One person was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to Fire Media. A fourth person was taken in critical condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital.

The crash at about 6:06 p.m., according to police News Affairs.

The crash happened near the Wilson Avenue exit on Lake Shore Drive.

The southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were still shut down between Hollywood Avenue and Montrose Avenue at 9 p.m. Saturday evening, according to police.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit were still investigating at the scene at 9 p.m., police said.
