School On Great Lakes Naval Base Almost Doesn't Open Over Security Dispute

GREAT LAKES NAVAL BASE, Ill. (CBS) -- An elementary school on the Great Lakes Naval Base almost didn't open for the first day of school this week.

As WBBM Newsradio's Lisa Fielding reports, Forrestal School did indeed open as planned for another academic year. But that opening was almost called off because the school didn't have any security deal in place.

"Great Lakes was apparently under the impression that North Chicago was going to provide police services for the school on the basis as well, and according to the City of North Chicago, no, the school is not included, and so they had no protection for the school," said Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran.

Curran says his office stepped in to help when North Chicago police said they would not be responding to any calls due to a contract snafu.

Curran says the sheriff's office will continue to provide service until further notice, and he hopes the two sides will settle for the safety of the students.
