Police: Man Shoots Woman In Head, Fires At Officers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police had one person in custody Wednesday morning in connection with a drive-by shooting that left a woman critically wounded, followed by a shootout with officers, in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Police say around 11 p.m. Tuesday, a 47-year-old woman was shot in the head in the 6700 block of South Blackstone Avenue. Officers witnessed the shooting.

The gunman tried to flee the scene, but the car he was riding in crashed just one block to the south, police said.

When officers confronted the man as he exited the car, he allegedly began shooting at them. Officers fired back, but the man ran off, police said.

No officers were injured.

The woman who was shot was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was reported in critical condition, police said.

A male suspect, whose age was not immediately known, was in custody Wednesday morning, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.
