Shot Fired At School Bus With Kids Onboard

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A school bus filled with children enrolled at Our Lady Of Guadalupe elementary school was apparently shot at in the South Deering neighborhood on Friday.

A bullet struck a seat and two windows, but none of the approximately 25 children on the bus or the driver was wounded.

The school bus, which had approximately 25 passengers, was picking children at 106th Street and Calhoun Avenue at approximately 7:48 a.m. when the incident occurred, police said.

The school bus was headed to Our Lady of Guadalupe elementary school at 9050 S. Burley Ave. It proceeded to drop the children off at the school.

"Gratefully none of the students were harmed, and this incident demonstrates why the school's mission is so critical to its families," Ryan Blackburn, from the Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools, told the Sun-Times Media Wire.

"Teaching our students to learn well and live as disciples of Jesus Christ is what we do, and any action that threatens our children's safety can not be tolerated. The school's administration is actively working with the Chicago Police Department and the Office of Catholic Schools on this matter."

Blackburn added that the school staff and principal are also monitoring the students should any of them need counseling,.
