Village Of Skokie Asks Residents To Leave Cars At Home

SKOKIE, Ill. (CBS) -- The Village of Skokie is asking residents to leave the car at home this Friday.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, Friday is car-free day in Skokie. In partnership with the Active Transportation Alliance, village spokeswoman Ann Tennes is encouraging residents to give up driving for at least one day.

Many village employees, she says, will be riding their bikes to work.

"The act of riding their bicycle on the designated car-free day, hopefully will trigger the thought of future behavior changes -- 'You know, maybe the next nice day, I'll ride my bike as well,'" Tennes said. "So hopefully there would be some triggers to more long-lasting changes."

Tennes says one day of no-driving might not make all that much difference to the environment, but it's a start.
