The 17-year-old victim, DeJuan Jackson, was shot once in the head just after 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of South Lake Park Avenue, police said.

Jackson had been walking with friends to his grandmother's house when the shooter opened fire, authorities said in published reports.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 7:58 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

On Saturday morning, charges were approved against the 14-year-old, police said.

It is unclear if the 14-year-old is a gang member.

Police and Jackson's family say the victim was not involved in a gang, according to a Chicago Tribune report.
