Metra Electric District Train Kills Man In Hyde Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Metra Electric District train Tuesday struck and killed a trespasser near its 53rd Street station in Hyde Park.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the male trespasser was struck at about 5:50 p.m. The Blue Island-bound train was held at the scene of the accident for more than an hour while the body was removed and police conducted the investigation.

Although Chicago Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene, no one was transported. Gillis said that no one else was hurt.

The Electric District right-of-way is on an elevated embankment, and pedestrians are not allowed on it, but Gillis was unable to say immediately if the death was a suicide or an accident.
