DES PLAINES (CBS) -- A fire in north suburban Des Plaines on Monday killed a woman and injured a man inside the home, while a police officer trying to rescue the occupants was also hurt.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight in the 1000 block of Irwin.

Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax said when fire fighters arrived on the scene, the single family home was engulfed in flames.

The body of Sandra Lupi, 49, was found on the lower level of the home.

An adult male was found in the home after breathing in too much smoke, and he was treated at the scene.

A Des Plaines police officer was treated at the scene after attempting to rescue the occupants.

Wax said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
