South Side Pastor Corey Brooks Nears End Of Cross-Country Walk

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The South Side pastor who spent three months camping on the roof of an old motel last winter is just about done with a walk across the country.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser interviewed Corey Brooks in Los Angeles, nearing the end of a 3,100-mile journey on four pairs of shoes.

"It's been a long, tough walk," he said.

He started the walk in June, and he says he'll need a knee operation when he's done. He also said he has lost 25 to 30 pounds.

Brooks and his team have been walking to raise money to build a community center and to give kids something to do besides shoot each other.

"Kids are dying every day," he said. "So when I think about the whole walk, I think about how it's been a significant part of our lives. But we got to keep on walking and keep on doing the things we need to do to enhance the lives of people."

Brooks has raised about a half-million dollars on the walk.
