Police Make Arrest In Fatal Zion Hit-Run

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 30-year old Zion man is being held on $250,000 bond in the hit and run death of a 20-year old man last week.

Deputy Police Chief Steve Dumyahn says Alberto Mejia is charged with running down and killing 20-year-old Francisco Avila early last Wednesday.

Police figured out they were looking for Mejia when they found parts of his car at the scene.

Investigators were able to determine it was a not-so-common Scion XB with a distinctive color--black and burnt orange--and narrowed their computer search down to cars like that in the Zion area.

"That actually had a lot to do with it, matching parts of the car," Dumyahn said.

Police say Mejia's girlfriend told investigators Mejia had thought he had hit something, but she wouldn't say anything more after that.

Her text messages suggest the pair may have been trying to erase evidence of any damage.
