Arsenal Road Closed Due To Incident At Exxon Joliet Refinery

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Arsenal Road, from I-55 to Baseline Road in Elwood, has been temporarily closed due to an incident at the ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery.

At approximately 9 a.m., a release of petroleum by-products landed on local roadways in the immediate area. The product poses no health hazard and emergency crews are on scene remedying the situation.

However, the substance on the road made conditions slippery, and officials closed off that section of Arsenal Road.

The Will County Highway Department is sanding the roadway, and the Will County Sheriff's Department is helping divert traffic.

The leak has been contained, and air testing revealed no health hazard.

Passenger vehicles soiled by the released material can be washed for free at the Delta Sonic Car Wash at Jefferson Street and Larkin Avenue in Joliet. Semi trucks can be washed at A&R Transport, at 2224 Empress Road in Joliet. An ExxonMobil representative will be at both locations during business hours throughout the weekend.
