Father Charged With Accidentally Shooting His Son

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The father of a 17-year-old boy who was accidentally shot as the two struggled for control of a handgun at their Rogers Park home has been charged in connection with the incident.

Charles Johnson, 53, was charged early Monday with felony unlawful use of a weapon, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak. Johnson is a convicted felon and barred from owning a handgun.

He is scheduled to appear in Cook County Bond court Monday.

Police said Johnson's son was accidentally shot in the head as the father and son argued and struggled for control of the weapon at their home in the 1300 block of West Estes Avenue Saturday evening.

Johnson reportedly confronted his son about the handgun after he saw the weapon sitting on his son's desk, police said.

"It appears the son had (the gun) and he was trying to take it away from him," Police News Affairs officer Robert Perez said. As they were wrestling over the handgun, "it discharged in the process."

The boy remained in critical condition Monday morning at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, police said.
