Thanksgiving Holiday A Lazy Weekend For Many, But Not Plumbers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- While a lot of people enjoy the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, there's no time for plumbers to take a tryptophan-induced nap.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports this is the busiest time of year for plumbers. Houses are full of guests, kitchens are constantly in use -- not to mention toilets -- and clogs are as much a part of the holiday weekend as turkey and stuffing.

Roto-Rooter is fully staffed all weekend. The plumbing service company's Chicago general manager, Joe DeLauder, said on the Friday after Thanksgiving, business goes up 50 percent from a typical Friday.

For the entire weekend, Thursday through Sunday, business is up 21 percent, DeLauder said. Typically, he says, they're called upon to unclog kitchen sinks.

DeLauder advises people not to put fats or oils down the drain. And he says the same goes for stringy and starchy vegetables and fruits. He says the garbage disposals often can't handle them.
