Father, 5-Year-Old Son Struck By Car In Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. (STMW) -- A 39-year-old man and his 5-year-old son were both seriously injured Thursday morning when they were struck by a vehicle as the man walked the boy to school in north suburban Evanston, police said.

The two, who live in Evanston, were crossing Ridge Avenue at Grove Street about 8:45 a.m. when a vehicle driven by a 57-year-old woman struck them both, Evanston police said.

The father was walking the child to a nearby public school, police said. Both father and son were taken to Evanston Hospital with serious injuries.

The father was listed in critical condition and the son is listed in "stable" condition, police said. The driver of the vehicle, also an Evanston resident, was not expected to be issued any citations, police said.

Ridge Avenue from Lake Street to Davis Street was closed until noon. Additionally, Grove Street from Ridge Avenue to Asbury Avenue was also closed for the same length of time.

Evanston Police traffic officers and the Major Crash Assistance Team are investigating.
