Suburban VFW Post Says Landlord Told Them To Remove U.S. Flag

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. (CBS) -- The VFW post commander in Glendale Heights said the post's new landlord has told them to take down their American flag.

The letter came from the property manager for the new landlord of VFW Post 2377 in Glendale Heights, telling them "flags are prohibited" by their lease, and flags is underlined.

"If that's a sticking point - that we have to remove our flags - then she's going to have one hell of a fight on her hands," said VFW Post Commander Terrence House. "I think it really comes down to, they want the VFW out of there, so that they can probably rent it to someone for a higher price."

House said the Glendale Heights VFW Post has been at the same location for more than 20 years, and now has 247 members – including veterans of wars from this decade and all the way back to World War II.

"It's causing great displeasure among the membership," he said.

He said displaying the American flag and the POW flag out front is one of the freedoms they fought for.

Newsradio has tried to reach the property manager at Midland Realty.
