Man Charged With Breaking Into, Trying To Burglarize Cop's Home

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer suffered a broken bone in one of his hands while struggling with a man who broke into the officer's Wicker Park home on Friday and tried to burglarize it.

The officer encountered 19-year-old Elraheem Wilkins attempting to leave the residence in the 1600 block of West Beach Avenue on Friday morning with items belonging to the officer, a release from police News Affairs said. The officer identified himself as a Chicago Police Officer and ordered the man to stop, but Wilkins struggled with the officer.

As a result of the struggle the officer suffered a broken bone in his right hand and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the release said.

Wilkins, of the 1500 block North Rockwell, was arrested about 10 a.m. on Friday and charged with one felony count each of residential burglary, aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting arrest, and home invasion which caused injury.

He was expected in court for a bond hearing on Saturday.
