Rutherford's Office Seeks 3 Percent Budget Cut

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- Whether it's a computer mainframe deal in the five figures or it's $1,178 worth of paper towels and toilet paper, no saving is too small to escape the notice of Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford.

Rutherford announced Monday afternoon he will seek a budget for Fiscal Year 2014 that reflects a three percent cut from the current year's. In total, Rutherford says he will operate at the office's 1999 level.

The headcount in the office is about 170.

"If we have vacancies, we will look at whether we need to fill them, and if we can consolidate positions, we will do that," he said.

Rutherford does not have visions that he can solve the state budget problems from the treasurer's office.

"I make it very clear, even when I spoke at the Mount Pulaski Rotary Club today at lunch, that everything I've done within my office, in the big picture of the budget problem, is worth about a nickel. But the fact of the matter is it is important for every one of us to do everything we can to be able to be able to save that nickel," he said.
