Downstate Little League Raffling Off Rifle To Raise Money For Equipment

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A small town in central Illinois is raising eyebrows with the unusual prize it's raffling off in a Little League fundraiser: an AR-15 rifle.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports Atwood-Hammond Little League commissioner Steven McClain said, to raise money for uniforms and equipment for the team from Atwood, they are raffling off the military-style rifle and a 30-round magazine.

He told WCIA-TV that more conventional prizes at a raffle last year brought in only $10, so they needed to do something different this year.

"We could have went with a basic shotgun, or something simple, but obviously it's not going to draw the attention, it's not going to draw the volume that we're hoping to make," he said.

The gun shop offering the AR-15 for the raffle is also raffling off another AR-15 for a local cancer foundation, raising $7,000 so far in two months.

The winner of the Little League raffle in June will have to have a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card, and must pass a background check.
