2 Dead, 21 Wounded In Weekend Gun Violence

(STMW) -- Two men were fatally shot and 21 others were wounded in gun violence across the city over the Easter weekend, including a father and his 12-year-old son who were shot as they got out of a vehicle.

The latest killing was early Sunday, when Akeem Manago, 19, was shot while walking with a 23-yer-old man about 1:50 a.m. in the 1300 block of block of West Hastings when four gunmen approached from behind and opened fire, authorities said. Manago, of the 3700 block of South Wells Street, died less than an hour later. The 23-year-old man was hit in the leg and taken to a hospital in good condition.

In the weekend's first shooting death, Eugenio Solano, 23, of the 1700 block of North Francisco, was walking with a 44-year-old man 8:05 p.m. Friday in the 1800 block of North Francisco in the Logan Square neighborhood when three men approached and asked for directions, police said. Then one of the men pulled out a gun and opened fire. Solano was shot in the chest and died at the scene, less than a block from his home. The 44-year-old man suffered a minor gunshot wound in his hand as he ran away.

The most recent shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. Sunday in the 6300 block of South Wolcott. A person, whose age and gender were not immediately available, was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

In other weekend shootings:
◆ About 9:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of South Troy, a male, whose age was not immediately available, was shot multiple times, police said. He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

◆ About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was shot about in his stomach in the 1700 block of North Lockwood in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital.

◆ About 6 a.m. Sunday, a 40-year-oldman was shot in the arm in the 4300 block of North Elston, police said. He was listed in good condition at Swedish Covenent Hospital on Sunday morning.

◆ About 2:30 a.m. Sunday, three men were shot in the 2000 block of West 68th Place. One of the men was found at the scene with a gunshot wound in his leg. He was listed in good condition on Sunday morning. The other men were located when police pulled over two vehicles that had fled the area. Officers pulled over a Buick LeSabre several blocks from the shooting and found a 23-year-old man with gunshot wounds in his leg and face, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital. Police found the third man when they pulled over a van near the scene of the shooting. A 20-year old man in the van had a bullet graze wound in his head but he refused medical help, police said. No arrests were made.

◆ About 2:15 a.m. Sunday, a 33-year-old man walked into Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in his arm. He told police he was outside the United Center when he heard a gunshot and felt pain. He was listed in good condition Sunday at the hospital.

◆ About 1:45 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was shot in the leg when he answered the front door of his home in the 2000 block of West Randolph, police said.

◆ Early Sunday, a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 2000 block of West Maypole.

On Saturday, five people were injured in shootings. An 18-year-old woman who was shot five minutes after midnight in the Garfield Park neighborhood was the day's first victim. She was listed in good condition early Saturday with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

About 9:40 a.m. Saturday, a 38-year-old man and his 12-year-old son were wounded in a shooting in the 5300 block of South Prairie Avenue.

The two were getting out of a vehicle at the rear of a home when someone opened fire, striking father and son with bullets, police said. Gunfire struck the father in the right foot and the boy in the right thigh.

The man drove the two to Provident Hospital of Cook County, police said. Police said Saturday evening that the boy would be transferred to Comer Children's Hospital. The two were both listed in good condition with non life-threatening injuries.

In addition to one man who was shot to death on Friday, six other people were injured in gun violence.

About 11:45 p.m. Friday, a man was shot in the head while riding in a car in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Police said the 35-year-old man was a passenger in a Chevrolet Impala traveling in the 6900 block of South Indiana Avenue when the car passed several people fighting on the street. Shots were fired and the man was struck in the head by a bullet.

The driver of the Impala fled the area, traveling several blocks from the scene of the shooting to the 6500 block of South State Street.

The wounded man, who is believed to be a gang member and did not cooperate with investigators, was listed in "stable" condition Saturday morning, police said.

In addition to Friday's seven victims of gun violence, Chicago Police shot a 17-year-old boy who allegedly pointed a gun at officers during a foot chase Friday.

Police said the boy, part of a group suspected of firing shots in the area, was running from officers about 3:15 p.m. near East 95th Street and South Jeffrey Boulevard when he aimed the gun at them.
