Four Firefighters Injured In Extra Alarm Fire On South Side
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Four firefighters were injured inside a burning building after a stairway collapsed in the South Side South Chicago neighborhood during a 2-11 fire Saturday morning.
All the firefighters who were in the building at 9041 S. Muskegon Ave. got out of the building and have been accounted for, and the firefighting efforts were then switched to a "defensive" mode, meaning fire personnel were fighting it from the outside, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Four firefighters were injured after a stairway collapsed during a fire in the three-story building, according to Fire Media Affairs.
A 2-11 alarm was called for the fire about 9 a.m. An EMS Plan I, which sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was also called, as was the "Mayday" call about that time. The fire was out by about 9:40 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.
Two firefighters, including a female firefighter, suffered smoke inhalation, according to Fire Media Affairs. Two others suffered minor injuries. All were taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital with minor injuries. The injuries were sustained due to the stairway collapse, according to Fire Media Affairs, who initially said the injuries were not related to the stairway collapse.
Four residents were displaced by the fire, according to police.
A 2-11 alarm sends at least eight engines, four trucks, two tower ladders, five battalion chiefs, a district chief, a deputy district chief, a squad company, an ambulance and the Command Van to the scene.
