Construction Of New Malcolm X Campus To Boost Local Jobs

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Emanuel Administration says the $251-million-dollar plan for a new Malcolm X College campus on the West Side will boast an African-African architect and local hiring, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

The City Colleges will build a new 500,000 square foot Malcolm X across the street from the present building and the black-owned firm Moody-Nolan won the bidding to be the primary architect.

Chancellor Cheryl Hyman says there will be 950 construction jobs on the project and 120 of them will be for residents of the surrounding West Side community.

"As for those residents interested, but without the skills to seize these jobs, we are creating a special free training program for up to 50 community members at Dawson Technical Institute so they will be ready when the jobs start to come available in 2014," said Hyman.

Malcolm X will specialize in training for jobs in health sciences and the new facility will contain a simulated hospital.
