Two Hurt When School Bus, SUV Collide In Inverness

INVERNESS, Ill. (CBS) -- The driver of an SUV suffered "very serious" injuries and a school bus driver also was hospitalized on Thursday, after their vehicles were involved in an ugly wreck in northwest suburban Inverness.

No students were on the school bus when it crashed head-on with an SUV near Palatine and Highland roads, shortly before 4 p.m.

The school bus driver was taken to a local hospital, but his injuries did not appear serious, according to the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District, which responded to the crash.

The driver of the SUV had to be extricated from his vehicle, which took about 25 minutes. He was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights in "very serious" condition. The SUV was practically obliterated in the collision.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
