Robber Gets 40 Years For Murder In Botched Armored Truck Heist

(STMW) -- A man was sentenced to prison for murder Friday for the botched 2011 robbery of an armored truck that left his partner dead.

Judge Matthew Coghlan sentenced Robert Carey, 52, to 40 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in January 2011, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

Prosecutors said Carey and Jimmy Townsend approached a guard on Jan. 28, 2011, as he carried a bag of cash from a dollar store to an armored car parked near West Chicago and North Homan avenues, according to prosecutors.

The two approached but the guard fatally shot Townsend when he pointed a sawed-off shotgun, prosecutors said. The guard then struggled with Carey, who was carrying a .22 caliber handgun, for the bag of money.

Townsend, 52, of the 5400 block of West Quincy, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Another guard then shot Carey in the head and leg, according to the state's attorney's office. The guards were not injured, authorities said.

Carey, of the 800 block of North Central Park Avenue, had been held without bond since his arrest.
