Head Of Local Gay Sports Group Cheers Jason Collins' Decision

CHICAGO (CBS) -- NBA Player Jason Collins has come out as the first openly gay active male athlete in a major U.S. professional team sport.

As WBBM"s Lisa Fielding reports, the move is being applauded by Chicago gay rights groups.

Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association President Brian Kupersmit says Jason Collins announcement has changed the face of sports.

"We are just really excited about the opportunity that this opens up for gay youth, for the sports world and for the gay community in general," said Kupersmit.

Kupersmit says most likely, Collins' disclosure will pave the way for more like it.

"Hopefully, we will see it in the NFL, we will see it in the NHL and Major League Baseball and we will see the ripple effects as far as youth playing sports, kids feeling more comfortable being out and participating in sports," said Kupersmit.

The CMSA is the largest non-profit gay and lesbian sports organization in the Midwest.
