(CBS) Former Packers safety Leroy Butler was scheduled to speak at a Wisconsin church this week, but that engagement was abruptly called off after he congratulated NBA player Jason Collins for revealing his homosexuality.

“Congrats to Jason Collins,” Butler tweeted Monday.

A day later, the church informed Butler that he could only give the speech if he deleted the tweet and asked God for forgiveness. Butler refused, forfeiting the $8500 he was going to receive for the appearance.

Wednesday, Butler had more details.

“I found out what happened,” he tweeted. “I guess some parents went to the church and complained about my tweet for support of Jason Collins, so sad.”
