Monk Accused Of Attempted Kidnapping Taken Into Custody Again

(CBS) -- A monk from Wisconsin is back behind bars in Lake County, Ill.

Thomas Chmura is accused of attempting to abduct an Antioch girl. His bond was revoked when he reportedly was caught in the presence of children at his Benet Lake, Wisc. complex.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards talks with the mother of the young girl who was allegedly approached by the monk.

Chmura served a silent life of contemplation. But it's alleged that for weeks he contemplated kidnapping a 14-year-old girl.

"She told her friend, 'I think this car is following us.' The friend's like, No, you're just seeing things,'" the mother of the alleged victim said Monday.

She was not.

Chmura was arrested in the abbey's vehicle. He was charged, bonded out and returned to St. Benedict's Abbey, just north of the state line with access to kids.

He was arrested again, and admitted trolling for weeks, approaching a number of girls. The monk reportedly told police his goal was "sexual gratification."

Chmura is charged with attempted child abduction and disorderly conduct and now is jailed with no bond.
