Man Charged With Videotaping Women In Hospital Washroom

WHEATON, Ill. (STMW) -- A poorly secured cell phone in a west suburban hospital washroom that a man had allegedly set up to secretly videotape women in the toilet area was discovered by a woman when the phone fell to the washroom floor on Friday. She alerted police, who then arrested and charged a 49-year-old Franklin Park man with unlawful videotaping.

That man, Salvador Perez, of the 2500 block of Sonia Avenue in Franklin Park, was being held at the DuPage County Jail Saturday morning, after DuPage County Judge Michael Wolfe set his bond at $150,000.

Prosecutors allege that on Friday, Perez positioned his cell phone under the sink of a uni-sex bathroom at Elmhurst Hospital. According to a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office, Perez positioned the phone so that the video camera on the phone would record the toilet area of the bathroom. After putting the phone in the bathroom, Perez allegedly activated the video record function and left the bathroom. That same day, while a woman was using the bathroom, the cell phone fell from beneath the sink. The woman alerted authorities, resulting in the charges against Perez.

Perez was charged with unlawful videotaping, a Class 4 felony, the release said.

"The allegations against Mr. Perez Are very disturbing," DuPage County State's Atorney Robert Berlin said. "Invading another person's privacy in such a manner will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law."

Perez's next court appearance is scheduled for June 24 in front of Judge George Bakalis, the state's attorney's office said. As an additional condition of bond, Perez will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device should he post bond.
