Congressman Quigley's Bill Would Require New Federal Buildings To Be Bird Friendly

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Congressman Michael Quigley hopes to prevent millions of bird deaths annually with legislation he's just introduced in Washington, reports WBBM's John Cody.

Quigley's Bill Would Require Federal Buildings To Be Bird Friendly

Congressman Quigley's bill would require any new federal buildings to be built bird friendly, less likely attract birds killed by trying to fly through the windows.

"I think you probably see something that is not so much reflected glass and I think the second thing is you will see a policy within the building as well especially during the migratory pattern, they shut the lights off at a certain time or close the blinds," said Quigley.

Quigley says ornithologists estimate bird collisions kill one billion birds every year. He believes making all new federal buildings bird friendly would save birds lives and point the nation towards architecture that would radically reduce bird kills without any significant increase in construction costs.
