High-Rise Fire Drill Conducted At Aon Center

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago firefighters were training downtown today for dealing with a high-rise fire.

The call went out around 9 a.m. for one of Chicago's tallest, the Aon Center, and Commissioner Jose Santiago says they took no short cuts.

"They actually responded, put all of their gear on there just like the real live fire. They get in and report to the lobby. In this particular fire, the fire was on the 75th floor. The 75th floor was completely filled with theatrical smoke they could not see their hands in front of them.

Santiago says although rare, high-rise fires are the most difficult to fight, and you have to be in shape for this job

He says carrying 120 pounds of gear on you while climbing stairs, it's not easy. Chiefs also get to test their tactics and figure out what works and what doesn't.
