Gary Renews Dollar Home Program

GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- Under a renewed program in Gary--a dollar is all you'll need to buy a home, reports WBBM's Brandis Friedman.

For Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, the dollar home program hits close to home, literally.

"My first house was a dollar house," said Freeman-Wilson.

The program, initially funded by HUD in the 80s and 90s is returning to Gary, this time under the city's management. It allows qualified residents to buy a home in the University Park neighborhood for just a dollar if residents can prove they can bring the house up to code in six months.

Freeman-Wilson says the idea is to get those abandoned homes back on the city's tax rolls once they have been brought to code, give residents new homes and increase property values for everyone.
