Chicago Police Car, Garbage Truck Crash In Back Of The Yards

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was hurt Tuesday night, when his squad car was involved in a crash with a garbage truck in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Police said, around 9:15 p.m., a police officer was driving a Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser when he collided with a city garbage truck at the intersection of 43rd Street and Ashland Avenue.

A Fire Department spokesman said the squad car was equipped with airbags, and the officer was conscious and alert as firefighters cut him out of the badly damaged vehicle.

Luckily for the officer, a Chicago fire station is only a block away at 44th Street and Ashland Avenue.

The officer was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
