CHICAGO (CBS) -- A mother and her 5-year-old son were found shot to death early Friday at a home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports police roped off a large section of the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue, after finding a 31-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son dead inside a two-flat home around 2:40 a.m. Both had been shot.

Relatives identified the mother as Chavonne Brown, and her son as Sterling Sims.

Sterling graduated from preschool two weeks ago, and was excited to start kindergarten, according to his family. Brown worked at a daycare center.

According to their family, Sterling's 11-year-old brother witnessed the shooting, but police could not confirm that. The boy apparently knew who the gunman was, and was not shot only because the gun jammed, relatives said.

The 11-year-old boy escaped unharmed and called police.

Police said there was no evidence of a break-in, and the shooting was not a random crime.
