WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STMW) — A northwest suburban man who thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl for sex last week was instead met by a Lake County Sheriff’s detective who had replied to his online ad for a “companion.”

Sheriff’s police said 27-year-old Marco Gomez of the 300 block of Standish Street in Elgin posted an advertisement on Craigslist, looking for a companion.

Once the ad was posted, he began communicating with who he thought was a 14-year-old girl, but that “girl” was actually a sheriff’s detective, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

The two arranged to meet on July 3, but when Gomez arrived at the meeting place, a site in Lake County which was not disclosed by police, he was met by detectives, the statement said.
