Girl Critically Injured After Falling Over Department Store Railing

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 10-year-old girl was critically injured after she fell over a railing at a Loop department store Friday afternoon.

About 3:30 p.m. the girl fell more than 40 feet over a railing in a Sears department store, located at 2 N. State St., according to Fire Media Affairs.

She sustained traumatic injuries and was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition, fire media said.

Sears spokeman Howard Riefs said customer safety is one of the company's highest priorities.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the young girl and her family, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities in investigating the matter," Riefs said in a statement.
