CPS Lays Off 200 Cafeteria Workers

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Public Schools have announced another round of layoffs. This time 200 cafeteria workers have received notice they will not have jobs in the upcoming school year.

The move by the school district, announced Friday, brings to more than 3,000 the number of staff cut this year.

Pointing to $700 million in cuts made in administrative spending since 2011, schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said Friday's layoffs will save the system about $4 million.

Last month, the district dismissed about 2,100 teachers and support staff. That is in addition to the approximately 850 employees laid off in June due to the closing of 50 schools considered underutilized.

CPS last week announced a $5.6 billion budget just as the district's general obligation debt was downgraded because of its huge pension obligation.
