CHICAGO (CBS) -- Free back-to-school haircuts were given out for a few hours today at about 10 barber shops and salons on the South and West sides.

At the Classy Image Barbershop in Roseland, there was a party atmosphere.

Barbers were cutting hair while food was being sold for a fundraiser and live and recorded music played.

Barbershop owner Randy Myles said, "This is our way of saying, yes, we are in the community and we're willing to help."

One of the organizers of the event, Farley JackMaster Funk, of the 300 DJ Coalition, says haircuts were going to young boys whose parents might not otherwise have been able to afford them.

He says they help build self-confidence.

Andreais Luttery's son, Donald, is going into first grade on Monday.

She says she wants him to look good for his first day of school.

"You don't want him to look any type of way going to school", she said.
