Man Shot On West Side Near Safe Passage Route

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 19-year-old man was shot Tuesday afternoon, within a block of a Safe Passage route leading to a Humboldt Park elementary school.

The man was with friends in the 3700 block of West Ohio Street about 5:15 p.m. when they got into a "confrontation" with another group, police said.

A person in the other group pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking the 19-year-old man in the right leg, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was treated and released.

The shooting happened about two hours after school let out on the second day of classes for Chicago Public Schools students, and about a block from a Safe Passage route leading to nearby Laura S. Ward Elementary School.

Ward is a welcoming school for students from Ryerson Elementary, one of 47 CPS elementary schools closed earlier this year.

Police are speaking to a "person of interest" in connection with the shooting, but no charges have been filed as of early Wednesday.

Area North detectives are investigating.
