Man Charged With Stabbing Death Of Ex-GF's Newer, Older Beau

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 27-year-old man is accused of murdering his former girlfriend's new lover, a man nearly twice his age who died earlier this week in Humboldt Park after the younger man repeatedly stabbed him in the chest, authorities said.

Oliver Spann was charged Saturday with one count of first-degree murder for stabbing 51-year-old Elvis Canfield to death in the 3900 block of West Division Street about 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police released few details about how Canfield, of the 1100 block of North Pulaski Road, died.

"The victim and the offender had an altercation, during the course of which the offender stabbed the victim multiple times," police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said of the stabbing, which occurred on a sidewalk.

Canfield, who was attacked several blocks from his home, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he died at 1:04 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Spann, of the 700 block of North Trumbull Avenue, is expected to appear in Cook County bond court on Sunday. He was charged after a witness identified him as Canfield's attacker.
