Downers Grove Man Charged With Arson For Park Fire

WHEATON, Ill. (STMW) -- A west suburban man has been charged with setting a blaze that caused $20,000 damage to a nearby park in July.

Kyle McCreedy, 19, of the 6500 block of Briargate Drive in Downers Grove was charged with one felony count of arson, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

He is accused of setting fire to a "concession pavilion/washroom" at McCollum Park in the 6800 block of Main Street in Downers Grove, a statement from prosecutors said.

McCreedy entered the park about 11 p.m. on July 2 and lit the structure on fire, according to prosecutors. The blaze caused about $20,000 damage.

"The allegations against Mr. McCreedy are outrageous," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. "Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire."

Downers Grove police eventually identified McCreedy as the arsonist and he turned himself in to authorities Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors said. He was released after posting 10 percent of a $50,000 bond and is due back in court on Oct. 14.
