Husband Gets Prison In Hammer Attack

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (STMW) -- A 45-year-old Aurora man has pleaded guilty to attacking his sleeping wife with a hammer last year, the Beacon-News is reporting.

Camilo Rivera was sentenced to six years in prison as part of his plea to an attempted murder charge during a recent hearing, court records state. Rivera was given credit for 394 days spent in Kane County Jail and will be required to serve 85 percent of the prison term. Rivera is not a U.S. citizen, meaning the conviction could cause him to be deported, court documents filed show.

Prosecutors said Rivera "for unknown reasons beat his wife about the head with a hammer" inside the family home on Clark Street in August 2012. Police said at the time that some of the couples' children were in the home at the time. Three of the children, who woke up to their mother's screams, were able to stop the attack. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition after the attack.

A judge earlier this month had scheduled Rivera to stand trial in January.
