Third Person Arrested In Grisly Southwest Side Killing, Dismemberment

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police have arrested the man they believe is the main assailant in the brutal murder of a Humboldt Park construction worker whose body was dismembered and buried.

The suspect, Milton Miranda, was picked up in Morrison County, New Jersey. It's believed he attacked Humboldt Park resident Jose Reyes with a pipe and a slit his throat.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy weighed in on the bizarre and brutal crime, after New Jersey police picked up a third suspect in the grisly murder of construction worker Jose Reyes.

"Just another tragedy that is simply unacceptable in a civilized society in my mind," said McCarthy.

19-year-old daisy Gutierrez and her father, 56-year-old Salvador Gutierrez, are already charged in connection with the murder, but it was daisy's boyfriend, Miranda, who police believe committed the most heinous acts.

Back in May, Prosecutors say Daisy lured Reyes to her bedroom in a Southwest Side home she shared with her father. That's when her boyfriend allegedly broke down door, hit Reyes with a pipe, slashed his throat and decapitated him.

Daisy allegedly called her father and said: the problem has been fixed. Then, her boyfriend dismembered the body and with Salvador's help, buried it in bags in the backyard.

Reyes was reported missing months ago, but it took five months for police to get a warrant, dig up the yard, and find Reyes' remains.

McCarthy revealed little about what finally led them to the backyard.

"It was a missing person and it segued into, ok, so where is the body if it is a death investigation? We got some information we were able to follow up on, which is what led us to the residence and the location where the body was subsequently found," said McCarthy.

Police sources tell CBS 2's Derrick Blakely Daisy Gutierrez's boyfriend has admitted his participation in Reyes' murder, as have Daisy and her father.

He's being held on a Chicago police arrest warrant and is expected to waive extradition to Illinois

Daisy Gutierrez is pregnant and has two children with Jose Reyes' brother.

Prosecutors say Jose also was attracted to Daisy, which made her current boyfriend violently jealous.
