Illinois 1 Of 6 States To Get Veterans Jobs Program

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois is one of six states chosen for a special program to help military veterans make the transition to civilian job.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Monday the National Governors Association will bring its "Veterans Licensing and Certification Demonstration Policy Academy" to Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nevada and Virginia.

The program eases licensing requirements for military medics to become licensed practical nurses or emergency medical technicians. It aids ex-military police officers in their quests to join civilian police forces.

Quinn, a Democrat, is a member of the National Governors Association and lobbied for Illinois' inclusion.

The association believes that by streamlining licensing requirements, the states will reduce the number of unemployment insurance claims and the length of time that veterans draw benefits.
