First Day Candidates Can File Nominating Petitions

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Monday is the first day candidates in the upcoming elections can file nominating petitions.

Campaigns File Petitions

Historically, candidates fight for the first spot on the ballot by lining up outside of the Cook County Administration Building.

Several people representing various candidates for public office lined up on a dark cold Monday morning, hoping to be the first in line.

Being first can help secure the top spot on the ballot in the March 18 primary.

Races for governor, U.S. Senate, Congress and state and county offices are all up for grabs.

Candidates running for governor and other statewide offices submit their papers to the State Board of Elections in Springfield.

Candidates for municipal office file theirs with county clerks.
