As Dominick's Prepares To Close, Where To Find A Bargain

CHICAGO (CBS) -- There are 16 days until Dominick's shuts its doors for good in Chicago.

Bargain shoppers are finding savings already, depending on where you shop.

In this Original Report, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker went on a bargain hunt of her own.

Health, beauty and candy items went on sale at Dominick's earlier this week, and those shelves are mostly empty now.

On Friday, almost everything else--from pasta to detergent--will be marked half price.

Shoppers like Savannah Hayward plan to return.

"That means whatever organic stuff they have left will be 50 percent off as well as all the cheeses, all the good party things," she said.

Here's what won't be on sale: Some name brand items like Pepsi, Coke, and Starbucks. Fresh meat and fresh produce, too.

Not all Dominick's are closing. Four have been sold to Jewel, and you won't find any sales there.

Eleven stores have been sold to Mariano's. All eleven will close the end of December, with most to reopen in January or February.

Some of those stores will have sales, others will not.

That still leaves more than 50 stores offering great bargains, including half price liquor starting next week.

Check your local Dominick's for exactly when liquor will go on sale. Some stores plan to start offering 30 percent off on Monday. But most seem to be offering 50 percent off on Friday.

As we get closer to the Dec. 28 closing date, expect to see bigger discounts.

Anything left after the stores close will probably be donated to charity or returned to the manufacturer.
